frequently asked questions about Sharon Gerardi's art

Q: What is a gemstone?

A: A gemstone or gem (also called a precious or semi-precious stone, a fine gem, or jewel) is a piece of mineral, which, in cut and polished form, is used to make jewelry or other adornments. However certain rocks (such as lapis lazuli), or organic materials that are not minerals (such as amber or jet), are also used for jewelry, and are therefore often considered to be gemstones as well. Most gemstones are hard, but some soft minerals are used in jewelry because of their luster or other physical properties that have aesthetic value

Q: What metals does Sharon use to create her jewelry?

A: Sharon wirewraps cabochons and bends metal to create pendants and ear rings. The metals she uses are gold-filled, sterling silver, and copper.

Q: What exactly does gold-filled mean?

A: Gold filled wire is made by bonding a layer of 10-karat, 12-karat or 14-karat gold to a base of jeweler's brass. The wire is then drawn to the desired thickness. It became popular in the early 20th century and allows Gerardi Gems to keep our gold jewelry more affordable.
